Our Parish
To the locals in Battambang, the Catholic Church is known as Pet Yiey Chee, or the Hospital of the Grandmother Nuns. In 1905, the Sisters of Providence opened a hospital, an orphanage and a creche (a hospital for foundlings). They later became known for their work so many sick people came and sought cure at the Hospital of the Grandmother Nuns.
When the old church was destroyed, the Catholic community was orphaned. They were bereft of their family, community and homes. After the war, they built a temporary church in the ruins of the orphanage. Starting 2004, the work of reconstruction slowly began. The orphanage building which served as the Church was reinforced and expanded. Our parish is known as Our Lady of the Assumption Parish. As of 2012, we serve around 1,000 Catholics, 600 families, 195 catechumens and their families. We also serve our Buddhist and Muslim brothers and sisters through our social services.

The Battambang Parish is like the "cathedral parish" of the Apostolic Prefecture. It also serves as host for the Diocesian offices and many others activities.
